In Sickness and In Health: Navigating Weight Gain and Its Emotional Roller Coaster

It’s hard to believe that three years have passed since I said “I do” to Terence. Those words marked the beginning of a beautiful journey filled with joy, laughter, and countless memories. However, alongside the happiness of marriage, I’ve faced some unexpected challenges, particularly related to my physical health. Over these three years, I’ve gained over 30 pounds, and while I am happily married, I often find myself feeling physically and, at times, emotionally unwell.

The Weight of Change

Marriage is a transformative experience, and for many, it brings about changes in lifestyle. For me, the initial excitement of shared meals, cozy nights in, and celebrating milestones together contributed to a gradual increase in weight. Paired with the natural ups and downs of life (menopause–lol), this change has taken a toll on my overall well-being.

Despite the love and support from Terence, I’ve struggled how I feel. There are times when I look in the mirror and feel disconnected from the person I used to be. It’s a complicated feeling—knowing that I am loved and accepted by Terence, yet battling with my own feelings of inadequacy.

Emotional Turmoil

Weight gain can often trigger a whirlwind of emotions. I’ve experienced frustration, sadness, and even guilt for not maintaining the weight I was before our wedding. At times, these feelings can be overwhelming, leading to moments of self-doubt. I remind myself that my worth is not defined by a number on a scale, but it’s a struggle to internalize that belief fully.

In the midst of these challenges, Terence has been nothing short of amazing. His unwavering support has been a beacon of light during my darker days. He encourages me to focus on the positives and celebrates the little victories—whether that’s going for walks together, cooking healthy meals, or simply reminding me that I am beautiful just as I am. His kindness and understanding have made all the difference in how I navigate these emotions.

Finding a Path Forward

Recognizing that I want to make changes for my health—not just for appearance but for my overall well-being—has been a crucial step in my journey. I’ve started to focus on small, manageable changes rather than drastic measures. This includes incorporating more physical activity into my routine, exploring new healthy recipes, and prioritizing rest.

Moreover, I’ve learned the importance of self-compassion. It’s okay to acknowledge how I feel while also being kind to myself. I’m learning to celebrate my body for what it can do rather than how it looks. This shift in mindset has helped me find balance, and I’m beginning to appreciate the journey rather than just the destination.

Embracing Support

Having a supportive spouse is vital. Terence’s encouragement reminds me that I am not alone in this journey. We often talk openly about our health goals, and having those conversations creates a sense of accountability and camaraderie. We are in this together, and that shared commitment strengthens our bond.

As I reflect on the past three years, I realize that marriage is not just about the good times; it’s also about facing challenges together. My journey with weight gain has taught me resilience, the importance of communication, and the value of unconditional love.
